Summer Class First Posting - Ethical Issues in Sport

This is the first posting for the summer class in 365. If you are able to respond to this blog, then you have successful been signed up as a member. We will keep the first one short to get everyone going and as a warm-up.

As a group (all 3 of you) come up with 10 ethical issues in sport. Hint - you may need to do a little bit of googling to accomplish this task. Also think about your own experiences in sport as a participate and fan.

  1. Hey guys! I guess I will get us started. The first few ethical issues in sport I can think of are drugs, abuse/violence, and gambling. I remember there was a gambling controversy with Rich Neuheisel, the former UW football coach. He broke his contract by gambling on NCAA Basketball and then lied about it. There are three for now.

  2. Drugs in sports is unsthical becasue it is unnatural and interrupts fair play in competetion. Playing by the rules to insure equality is the legit way to interact fairly. Alex Rodrigez is a good example, he has been in the lime light making big money in his league. He feels the need to live up to everyones expectations therefore as he looses his skills as he ages, he begins to use steroids to keep his title of an amazing player. Playing the game unfair in sports will ruin the athletes image, therefore it is a lose, lose situation because an athlete has to lie to keep an outstanding performance, at the same cost try to keep it a secret, but once it leaks to the public people will not respect their image regardless how ledgendary they are. Once a lier and a cheater, no one will have no trust in these athletes.

  4. Well we talked about lying possibly being one today with the volleyball example, but I am not sure still if that classifies as a unethical form depending on the situation. Lying about using steroids for instance if consider unethical, but lying about if a ball touched you last or not may not fall under that same category.

  5. I definitely think that racial and sex descrimination are important issues. Even if these issues are not as promintent in todays sport, they should still be recognized. Another unethical innfluence can be from the media.
